Our Story

SmartBuild started as a Building and Construction Industry initiative. We know that using technology reduces the effort required when dealing with repeat and manual tasks. We also know that using technology saves time and enhances business efficiency.

So we began investigating project management systems, specifically looking for a system that dealt with reducing the costs of compliance with building regulations. What we found were systems that do a good job managing a business but didn’t offer options for ways to manage compliance with building regulations.

Like all good builders, we pulled our sleeves up, engaged creative IT developers and got on with developing our own system.

The first version of the SmartBuild system was launched in 2018 and quickly gained nationwide LBP users. We listened to the feedback of our users and began working hard to further enhance the system’s capabilities and functions. SmartBuild became a unique, innovative application purposely designed for solo LBPs and for businesses engaging LBPs.

We have been using SmartBuild in our own medium size residential building company from day one. The ability to quickly generate error-free LBP Memorandum forms and the ease of detailing tasks using the tick box has been an instant winner.

The move to using the Large Team Project plan enabled further efficiencies. Using the centralised Project portal for sharing project documents and getting records uploaded directly on to the Project by our on-site crew is gold.

Not having to send project ID details to each subbie and then checking their forms is priceless. We can now check all forms status on the dashboard anytime and from anywhere and simply click send.

Dan Albert

I own and operate a medium size residential building company providing quality construction services in the Wellington Region. I have been building for 40 years. I am trade qualified and I hold Carpentry and Site 2 LBP licenses.

I am passionate about our industry. I have trained many apprentices doing my part to share my experience and empower new blood so the industry as a whole continue to provide fit for purpose, comfortable and health homes for all New Zealanders. I am always looking for ways to improve my knowledge, business operations and communication skills.

I keep up with industry relevant publications/communications and attend many industry workshops, events and conferences. Over the years I have spent considerable voluntary time supporting local community, charitable and industry organisations including school boards, Sport clubs (managing a local rugby club’s first XV team) and have served on the Wellington Master Builder exec. committee. Our building business has received several House of the Year awards and I had a stint serving as local and national judge for that competition.

I have always had an interest in how things work so Developing SmartBuild is my way of improving existing processes with the aim of reducing the commonly criticized “cost of compliance”.

I live in a beautiful coastal community. I love spending time with my family and friends. I enjoy kayaking, coastal hill hiking and bush walking. I also give the electric bike an outing from time to time. Being a builder there is always a project or two around the house and garden to get stuck into. I love spending time away from the everyday toil where my creative self can roam freely.
